Woman attacked at Sandy Bay beach
A quiet, early morning walk turned into a nightmare for a Hout Bay woman when she was raped on a Llandudno beach.

The 50-year-old woman, who cannot be named, was walking her dogs at around 8am on Sunday when she was approached by a "screaming man" who spoke only Afrikaans, according to Hout Bay police spokesperson Inspector Tanya Lesch.

A scuffle ensued between the two as the woman tried to fight off the suspect, Lesch said. He raped her on the rocks at Sandy Bay beach.

"She tried to fight him off and that's how they landed up at a part of the beach where there are some rocks," she said.

Giraffe slaughtered for food ... food shortages?
Johannesburg - Eight people appeared in a South African court on Monday accused of having stolen a giraffe from a game reserve and slaughtered it for food.

"They stole the giraffe for meat consumption because when police arrested them they were preparing to eat it," the SAPA news agency quoted police spokesperson Alpheus Mokale as saying.

Gang of 8 robs cash van
Johannesburg - A gang of eight armed men robbed a cash-in-transit van on the N12 highway in Boksburg on Monday, Gauteng police said.

Captain Julia Claasen said a Nissen Navara bakkie drove in front of a Fidelity Guards van opposite the Jet Park turn-off at about 17:40 on Monday.

Attacker stabs woman 17 times
Ermelo - An elderly Mpumalanga woman was stabbed 17 times by an incensed attacker after she'd tried to fight him off with pepper spray.

Yvonne Gubb, 65, who stays on a farm near Warburton, was stabbed in the back and stomach.

The attacker had gained entry to the farmhouse through the roof.

Gubb's daughter, 40-year-old Tracy Pemperton, who stays with her mom, said on Thursday she's almost sure there were more attackers outside. She said she'd heard noises, but thought nothing of it and went back to sleep.

Cop killed in Jhb shoot-out
Johannesburg - A policeman and a robber were shot dead during a shoot-out in Lenasia, Soweto police said on Tuesday.

Five men were robbing 20 residents including two off-duty officers who were attending a meeting at a hall in Extension 9 around 20:00 on Monday.

Elderly UK couple robbed in CT
Johannesburg - Two British tourists were attacked and robbed in Cape Town on Tuesday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Tristan Wadeley said the couple, aged 65 and 69, on holiday from England, were mugged on the scenic Victoria Road around 15:00.

"They were mugged while walking. A man ran up from behind and grabbed the woman's handbag, the old woman and man fell while trying to fight off the robber," said Wadely.

The couple were taken to Cape Town Medi-Clinic with knee injuries.

Prisoners moved after stabbing seven warders
Ten prisoners from the Brandvlei maximum security prison in Worcester have been transferred to other correctional facilities after stabbing seven warders in the prison yard on Sunday.

An investigation is under way.

SA expats ready to make their mark in election
SOUTH Africans living abroad have welcomed the Pretoria High Court‘s ruling yesterday which opens the way for expatriates to vote in the upcoming election.

A snap survey revealed South Africans living abroad still have a keen interest in South African politics, although many were surprised by Acting Judge Piet Ebersohn‘s ruling.

Former University of Port Elizabeth student Timothy Brown, who is living in England, said he was not aware they had the option to vote.

Murderer caught on camera
Mokopane - A black man arrested in connection with the death of a Polar Park woman committed his crime unaware that his actions had been recorded on closed-circuit TV.

The 30-year-old man is accused of killing a woman on a Rooipoort farm near Mokopane by slitting her throat with a knife on January 7. A security guard monitoring the farm on closed-circuit TV saw the murder unfold and notified his employer.

Foreigners hijacked in KZN
Durban - Three Swazi nationals were hijacked in KwaZulu-Natal's Mfekaye area while on their way to Durban on Sunday, police said on Monday.

Police spokesperson Jabulani Mdletshe said the hijackers had also taken R10 000 from the three men.

"They were changing a tyre on the N2 when they were approached by three men who demanded the car keys. The hijackers waited for them to fix the tyre and they drove their car with them to thick bush in the area."

Farmer robbed, shot
A 36-year-old farmer was admitted to hospital in a serious condition after he was shot and wounded during an armed robbery at his farm in Bronkhorstspruit near Pretoria, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Constable Seli Skhosana said the incident occurred on Saturday.

"The three armed men gained entry to the house by breaking the front door while the farmer, his wife and two children were asleep, at around 02:00."

Pensioner hacked to death
A 90-year-old man was hacked to death with an axe by intruders at his homestead in Mendu village in Willowvale, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the motive for the killing on Saturday might may have been robbery as the old man's wallet was empty.

"It appears the robbers were targeting his grant money as he only got it two days earlier," he said.

No arrests have been made.

Mozambican killed, wife raped
Johannesburg - A Mozambican national was killed and his wife gang-raped in Mpumalanga province's Hazyview area on Sunday, police said.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane on Monday said the 38-year-old man and his 35-year-old wife were accosted by a group of strangers who demanded money from them.

When the man tried to fight them off, they beat him with an unknown object and he died at the scene.

Gunmen hit twice in posh suburb
Welkom - While police were investigating the scene where a Welkom businessman had been shot and killed in his home, robbers attacked a second businessman and his family around the corner in the same neighbourhood.

Police suspect the murder of Martin Matsela, 52, and the attack on Patrick Khumalo, 34, who live only a few houses apart in Jan Cilliers Park, could be related.

Matsela's family was too shocked on Sunday to talk about his murder.

Crime wave hits Limpopo
Johannesburg - Limpopo saw a wave of crime over the last 24 hours, including four murders, a rape, an armed robbery and various other crimes, said police on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said police were investigating the murder of an elderly couple at ga Masemola in Nebo which took place at midnight on New Year's Eve.

"It is alleged the couple was asleep when attacked.

"The 70-year-old woman's throat was slit with a sharp instrument and her 73-year-old husband is suspected to have been fatally shot."

Black Man in court over ex-SA nurse
London - A 35-year-old man appeared in court on Monday accused of trying to kill a nurse who was found alive in the boot of her car after being missing for more than a week.

Justice Ngema appeared at Linlithgow Sheriff Court in Scotland charged with the attempted murder of Magdeline Makola.

Ngema, who is originally from South Africa but now lives in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, made no plea during the hearing, the Press Association reported.

Son kills mom with spear
Johannesburg - A 45-year-old man has allegedly murdered his mother with a spear in Willowvale, Queenstown, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Captain Lingisile Magama said the man, also suspected of being mentally ill, arrived home on Monday night armed with a spear.

He found his 60-year-old mother and told her he was looking for his sister. He allegedly told her he wanted to kill her.

Elma Burger, 72, murdered, Montagu by two black males
Black on white crime
November 11 2008 Police have arrested two black males, 17 and 18, on two farms in Montague in connection with the murder of a 72-year-old Montagu (Western Cape) grandmother, Mrs Elma Burger.It is believed they were the same young men who had already attacked the elderly Afrikaner widow at her smallholding several months earlier. The only stolen item: one cellphone.
